How much chia seed should you consume in a day?

Known to be a rich source of nutrients, fiber , omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium, chia seeds have become a popular superfood today. So it’s no wonder so many people swear by soaked chia seeds to start their day on a healthy note. “Yes, chia seeds are a great source of protein and fiber that help relieve constipation. Plus, they’re equally great for skin, hair, and hormone health. Dr. Karishma Shah, a nutritionist, told indianexpress.com. However, like everything, excessive consumption of chia seeds can have certain harmful effects. So how much is too much when it comes to these power-packed seeds?

To answer the same, Ayurveda expert Vara Yanamandra took to Instagram to write, “While you may be excited to try these internet-advertised foods, this post is a reminder that not all foods out there are for you. you”. Adding that “it is undoubtedly a healthy food”, the expert stressed that like any other food, “it can cause unwanted side effects when used in excess”.

In the post titled “What Can Go Wrong with Eating Chia Seeds Every Day?” Dr. Yanamandra further wrote that despite being a “high-fiber food with essential amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants that make them healthy as any other food”, these seeds are “the most advertised food today”.

This is because, if consumed in excess, the high fiber content in the seeds can make it difficult to digest and can trigger the motions that cause constipation . Not only this, “due to the presence of phytic acid in chia, the absorption of minerals such as iron and zinc from food may be affected,” he shared.

Additionally, people taking blood thinners should avoid consuming chia seeds, as they “may interact with blood thinners due to the high content of omega-3 fatty acids.”

Dr. Shah agreed, suggesting that “two to three tablespoons of chia seeds are enough to consume in a day.”

Dr. Yanamandra also listed some tips to keep in mind when consuming chia seeds

How to consume it then?

* Increase your water intake while consuming chia.

*Avoid in case of food intolerances or sensitivities.

* Discontinue use if you feel bloated after eating.

* Do not have it every day regularly!
